Hameedah Yahaya, a 300 level Bola Ajibola College of Law, Crescent University Abeokuta student is participating in the 2023 Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) on Climate Change and the Environment. The program is a once in a lifetime opportunity for student leaders to learn to connect with fellow change makers in the United States and other participating countries. Upon her return, Hameedah plans to implement new initiatives inspired by the program, and to share the knowledge gained from her experience with colleagues at Crescent University Abeokuta and contribute to further enrich the Environmental Law curriculum of the university.
Hameedah was selected to participate in the Study by the US Embassy in Nigeria. The prestigious study programme which runs from June 20th — July 26th in the University of Nevada in Reno, Texas, USA has participants from several countries including USA, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Ghana, Cameroun, Mali and Senegal. Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSls) for Student Leaders are intensive short-term academic programs whose purpose is to provide groups of undergraduate student leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills. The five-week Institutes consist of a balanced series of seminar discussions, readings, group presentations, and lectures. The coursework and classroom activities are complemented by educational travel, site visits, leadership activities, and volunteer opportunities within the local community. Participants discuss topics such as explore sustainable development; clean energy; conservation; environmental justice; ocean protection; pollution; economic impact; public health; and the impact of climate change specifically on underserved, youth, and minority populations and communities. In addition to classroom-based lectures and activities learning about the science behind climate change, participants engage with government officials, nonprofit organizations, and business to learn about how these individual sectors are working individually and together to address the unique climate risks in the state of Nevada. Participants also have the opportunity for cultural excursions in San Francisco, California, and Virginia City, Nevada.
